Also remember some times you will have to use the clutch if you can't find the right gear for a particular corner.
Time for a thought from the (very fast) Freddy Pett who did a remarkable job of being a novice on a fairly stock RS250 Aprilia in 2008;
Me "at Park Corner (Cadwell) it's either 3rd and go too slowly or 4th and slip the clutch"
Freddy "how about 4th and go faster?"
I can inform you some 18 months later when I found the nerve to brake a bit later, go back to 4th, get off the brakes a bit earlier and throw it in everything worked out fine (most times, ran out of track once but kept it upright), the increased speed there and the subsequent taking of Chris Curve in 5th is worth 2 seconds a lap.
Maybe more as I'm now (after
my crash) uttery ghey though the Gooseneck.
As Mark said, gear for the fastest part of the circuit them modify from there but on a roadbox you're probably going to find you need to slip the clutch somewhere.
