Project 'frankensteins monster'

So called because this bike will be built from parts of dead Kr1's & other long since deceased bikes
So no need to worry about originality
The frame I bought off Al a while back. The forks are from a zxr250, kindly donated by Charles

. The engine comes from my Kr1 (but it didn't have matching numbers anyway!) & the rest came from ebay & such like.
I intend to make this up as I go along, so there is no set plan. The only thing I have set my mind to, is to use original bodywork.
I have also set my self a target of less than £750 to complete it
I will be using a pair of Kr1 barrels (because they don't need relining) but I want to turn them into Kr1s barrels.
Now I know I will need to remove the bit of alloy on the intake side but I'm pretty sure I saw a project on here where the KIPS ports had been altered? Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Before:
After:
The auxillary exhaust port on a 1 barrel is smaller and the size of the tunnel between the port and the valve is also smaller. Drop a kr1s valve into a 1 barrel and all will be revealed.
Look at the step up into the powervalve, I would have altered it but I didn't have a decent enough tool to do it

Well done Dan, many thanks for that =D>
What effect does this have on engine performance?

I have absolutely no idea to be honest, it might not do anything. I might even be worse off with the big 1s valves in the smaller kr1 holes to be honest but I didn't have a full set of kr1 valves so I had to go down that route.
Dyno soon so will see what she makes then I will know more.
How are you getting on with your 1kt? I kind of miss mine

You sold the 1kt after all then Dan? Thats a shame mate
Mine is still in its infancy TBH
However, I am hoping to get the frame & swing arm powder coated at the same time I do the Kr1s frame/swinger.
I always find that once you have something to hang every thing off, projects seem to move along quicker.

Just ordered a pipercross filter, renthal dual compound grips & a few other bits & bobs
Sold my Xt you see

NO more four strokes for me
The problem is though......................
Do I keep them for this project or...............
Pop them on my Kr1
I could order some more couldn't I?
But more importantly, my oven arrives tomorrow
I'm gonna try my hand at powder coating
Only the smaller parts though, still need to get frame/swing arm/wheels to my nearest coater. I'm not including the oven in my budget because I can write it off against tax...........

Righty-o,
Done my first batch of coating today, had to do some for a customers bike, so did mine at the same time.

Don't like to blow my own trumpet but the picture does not do them justice

Apart from the shock linkages, but they'll do
Just going to order some silver powder for the next lot of parts.
Not sure what colour to do the calipers though, or the rear shock spring either
Told you I was making this up as I went along
I've decided to put the pipercross & renthal grips on my Kr1
So total cost so far is still £0.00

Yes indeed Fred.
About 3 years ago I bought a home powder coating machine for about £120(? ish) off ebay. My thinking being that you only have to coat 10 to 20 brackets before the thing pays for itself.
At the time I had an oven which cost nowt but it did'nt last long.
Knowing that I have a few projects that will need parts powder coated, it made a lot of sense to buy an oven to do the smaller stuff.
Its really quite easy to powder coat, the hard part is getting the timing right for curing the powder paint.
I'm still learning obviously but the first results are very encouraging.
Plus any small blemishes (like the ones on my shock linkages) can be touched up using hammerite etc.
This project is about building a good durable bike for as little as possible. And because the bike will be used all year round (as Kawasaki intended) I thought some of the techniques I'm using or about to use may be useful for other members who intend to restore/build multiple bikes. If you see what I mean.
Next new technique will be anodising (yeah yeah, I know

)

What I'll do is a step by step powder coating example, if anyone is interested

Yep I'm sure you are
I'll do the techniques I've learnt so far.
Including pre-heating porous metal, like cast aluminium etc & the best way to prepare steel etc
You don't need to spend a huge amount to get set up. As long as you have a compressor & an old oven (do not use the one in your kitchen!) it really is quite inexpensive.
And like I have said, the results are very impressive.
And being two stroke fans, the environment is obviously very important to you, well powder coating is actually very environmentally sound......

Looks good Howie
Like your ethos of keeping costs down and doing it yourself
Bike building like it used to be
You are obviously another super-scrimper like me

About an hour after a saw your first post KR-1R, my copy of PS dropped through the letter box, bizarre!
Looks a bit of a kerfuffle that anodising stuff but hey ho
Anyway, I've said it before & I'll say it again...............cheap tools should be banned.
Spent most of this morning dressing nuts & bolts, ready for re-plating.
Practically all the bolts I intend to re-use have been burred over or attacked with a hammer (I think

)
Can someone tell me what the original footpeg bracket bolts look like please? Lengths etc etc
I have a box full of original Kawasaki fixings but have no idea what they all come off
