Hi Gordi,

are you sure the plastic gear that drives the oil pump, is ok?

You need to bleed it Gordi, there's a little screw on the side of the pump. Slacken it off and let it run for a while.
It take a little while to get the oil from the pump down the pipes to the reeds.

If it is knackered, here's one on eBay for 15 quid, which is a good price.

Moe problems!! KIPs valves are very tight. Can be moved by hand with difficulty but motor won't move them. Please say it's something simple!!!!!

you'll have to take the head off, clean them and at the same time, check if they are staight .

you also have to check if the upper ring on them is below the top surface off the barrel. if you have scimmed barrels that might be a problem.

And you better fit the head onto the barrels first and then barrels/head onto the crankcase. Are you using an original Kawasaki head gasket?

The other thing to look for while the head is off is the area around the holes where the KIPS valves go through the head gasket. It's been found on some of the after-market head gaskets that the slight dish in this area is faceing down when fitted in the suggested manner causing it to rub on the KIPS valve making it hard to turn. Can't see any reason these gaskets couldn't be fitted upside-down to avoid this problem. :-k

I hate this thing

Post by Gordi »

Not sure at all, Charles. Don't think they will be for much longer!!
Ah, well.
Removed the head, cleaned the valves, refitted everything and the two left hand ones are free. The two on the right are still stiff despite trying everything. Will removing the barrels and fastening the head to them first actually help? If so, why? Totally baffled (frustrated, annoyed, etc) by this system!!
Valves all straight and problem just the same if valves reversed.

It might help: Kawasaki produced barrels that do not all have exact the same height. If you have two such 2 barrels and you first fit them onto the crankcase and then you try to fit the head you might put stress onto the valves and they might not turn freely

As said already, make sure you use an original head gasket, & make sure the head is flat, it's a must that you fit the head to the barrels before you fit the barrels to the crankcase

Thanks to everyone for info. KIPs valves finally sorted. Special thanks to Ray the Guru for his patience getting the cables the right length. Had to be trial and error as servo not mounted in original place. Will refit both radiators tomorrow, bleed the oil pump (thanks, Charles) and fire it up. Managed to get insured today (Q plate issues) after about 3 hours on the phone so MoT just round the corner now. Anybody know a deaf MoT tester?
