Urgent - RH exhaust / spannie needed for 1000 Bikes

Post by Woodsy » Sat Jun 30, 2018 8:35 pm

Just come to fit the exhausts in time for the 1000 Bikes track sessions next weekend (6/7th of July) only to find there’s a 5mm rust hole in the header FFS 🙄. Does anyone have a spare they’re willing to part with and ideally in the North West London area? I’m happy to pick up and pay cash on collection 👍.
Cheers,
Al

have a plate welded over it.
You know it's cold outside when you trip over dog shit instead of standing in it.

Cheers for the pragmatic approach! I’ve not got access to anyone who’s able to touch it unfortunately...
Unless anyone knows a competent welder local to Eastcote?

I would google Metal fabricators close to where you live. Then pop the pipe in the car van bike, and pop around. It wont be long before you meet a sensible engineer or someone who can point you towards one.
I did this for the cast iron fin repair on my vintage ped. Ended up at an Forge Ironworks. Guy that met me said yep do the repair, £25 collect later in wekk. Only when I picked it up did I find he was the owner director and he personally did the welding!

Good luck

Steve

Once headers get holes in they are really on borrowed time so probably not economical to fix

For a temporary fix perhaps look on halfords website to see if there is something to repair it long enough to last for the time you will need it. I have tried a lot of exhaust repair products but most are not very successful (on headers anyway)

Only other thing i can suggest is perhaps to carefully put a short screw in and perhaps try to seal around it with silicone or a metal repair resin/putty.

At least you can try the above with the exhaust still on the bike

Good luck anyway

Cut an old soup can in half. Wrap it round the pipe and put a couple of jubilee clips on. Fixed in under 10 mins

Guys, thanks so much for the thoughts and advice. I contacted a friend who runs a car restoration business (initially thought it might be a bit low brow for him!) and he’s going to get to n wig his chaps to patch and (perhaps) braze rather than weld. The temperature should be ok, even for a header. I’ll let you know how it goes...

So... the hole in question was welded up, and I was a happy camper! Until when I got home I spotted the hole diametrically opposite that neither of us had spotted...
It’s bodgit time now, so I’ve patched it with an exhaust bandage. I should get a few laps in before it starts to blow...

Time for the soup can and jubilee clips over the bandage

😂😂 it was a water leak from the right side steel pipe’s join into the crankcase (to feed the barrels) from the water pump that stopped play. I’ll probably have to ream the hole for a good, clean surface 🙄

But another RH pipe would still be appreciated!
