Recently bought another kr1s 1992, the problem:
Runs ok-ish but not happy up to 5000rpm, from there to 6000rpm it's an absolute pig! .... not backfiring but close, hicking and objecting, you would think it had a loose HT lead or running half choke on a warm engine. Once it hits 6000rpm it's fine and revs happily, if I hold it on part throttle in the 5 to 6000rpm band it feels like it's running out of petrol. On the open road you can avoid all this but when you hit traffic it's bloody dangerous.
THINGS I'VE TRIED:
Cleaned carbs, ( no change )
Fit new plugs, (problem has improved but still not right)old plugs were perfect colour when removed.
Swapped the CDI for a known good one ( no change )
If I have to take the petrol tank off once more I'm going to launch it down the drive.
 Alan

Sounds like blocked pilot jets to me. You should be able to blow down each one when then are removed quite easily.

they do run rough at that engine speed

i found putting the circlip in the needles top slot smooths it out - costs
nothing to try it before you start spending money

would put my life on it been the pilot jet either varnished up or blocked, if you have a spare the same size swap it about, better still swap em both sides as you have 50% chance of swapping the one thats ok! the rev range you described tells me everything. take em both out and blow thru em, this way you will find the offending pilot as it will be more restrictive, maybe by a tiny amount but enough to cause mayhem with the fueling. unfortunatly you will have to remove the tank unless you have fingers 7ft long! sorry
