Difficulty getting 2nd gear from 1st
My car has broken so i'm using the kr to commute to work this week.
Noticed that it is really difficult to get 2nd from 1st. All other gears fine.
When i click up it goes into neutral (neutral light on too). I have to really ram it up to get it into 2nd. Using my hand seems best whilst riding.
There is alot of slop in the gear linkage so i think this is the culprit but wondered if anyone had a similar experience?
Going down the box is fine for all gears. Going up also fine apart from 1st to 2nd. Once it's in 2nd it doesn't jump out or anything. Just struggles to get past neutral.
Cheers,
Dan

Re: Difficulty getting 2nd gear from 1st
Have you changed the gearbox oil recently? my Kr-1 had a clunky, tight gear change because last time I swapped the oil I put four stroke 10w-40 oil in it, after noticing the gear selection was tight and vague I swapped it for rock oil light gear oil, it felt like a different bike with smooth changes and no false neutrals, seems a cheap and easy way to start.

Re: Difficulty getting 2nd gear from 1st
I've had similar this year from gearbox oils, I've found ATF works best, and as it's cold at the moment it might worse than ever. Other issue I had was the selector drum bolt coming loose but that would affect all gears I think.
I'd try changing oil first.

Fresh light gear oil, definitely an improvement but still not right. I'll sort my gear linkage out, i think that is the issue. The bush is that worn that it is locking up i think as it goes mis-aligned.

Maccas
It is more work but have you tried to turn the clutch spacer
Sometimes the get worm and you wil get problems to put it in first gear (and from first to second)
It is located in the basket behind your plates (parts number is 920261308)
Cheers jarno,

Hi Jarno,
Thank you I will try that too if sorting the linkage doesn't improve things.
Cheers,
Dan

shouldn't need a clutch to shift. Best stripping it Dan and we'll take a look, I have plenty of transmission spares. Sounds like something worn to me.

That's a good point, even when i'm shifting without the clutch it won't go into second. Goes into neutral fine, once in neutral you have go back into first and try again.
Cheers Ben, i'll eliminate the linkage first and go from there.

Re: Difficulty getting 2nd gear from 1st
I'd definitly fix that worn likage first. sloppy links are very often a reason for dificult shifting. say you have 100% of travel on the pedal , but only 60% reaches the gear shaft, the 40 other are wasted in the links going in directions they are not supposed to.
it's the same like putting that tooth piece one tooth wrong on the gear shaft : you will also have difficulties in one direction of shifting.

Re: Difficulty getting 2nd gear from 1st
Found the culprit:
The linkage lever arm had been hitting the frame, preventing it moving any further.
This is owing to being poorly adjusted and also a lot of slop in the linkage. I need new rose joints for the linkage and a bush making for the side stand bracket that houses the gear lever.
Thanks chaps!

I wouldn't use ATF for all the tea in China- it's a gear killer. Best is a specific gear oil, 75W90 works very well. Even 10W40 is better than ATF.

Re: Difficulty getting 2nd gear from 1st
I thinck you are one of the few with that opinion. Have you ever seen what's inside automatic gearboxes ? gears and clutches, exactly the same as in a 2-stroke gearbox.Gerrit wrote:I wouldn't use ATF for all the tea in China- it's a gear killer. I uses ATF in all my gearboxes for years, never had any problem.
On what basis is your opinion founded ?
