First Steps

Post by salty »

This has taken a while to get off the ground but I am gradually turning a garage full of bits into something that looks like a bike.

Image

Currently this is a KR1-S frame with RGV 250 Swing Arm and rear wheel, ZXR400 L frorks and front wheel. Trying to get the rear suspension right before going much further. Have R6 shock (KR1 shock in picture)- and a large collection of dog bones and suspension linkages taken from a variety of bikes - bit of work required with spacers and changing bushes yet.

Plan is to source all the other parts from an ex race KR1-S bought off a guy called Rad - occasional poster on here

Hopefully work will proceed faster than last year - interupted by a bike free 7 months in Afghanistan (I joined the drinking club version of the TA but there must have been a mix up in the paperwork and I ended up in the hot & sunny sudden wieght loss programme) - still its a cheaper way to lose weight than titanium fastners and carbon fibre.

Tell you what Salty, it looks bloody fantastic in just the first pic! Even without its lump & all the bits.

I'm looking forward to this thread, I have a funny feeling this is going to be THEE project of 2010.

Keep the pics coming fella.

The pipes on the black bike are (I think) Nikons that have been cut and routed higher - sound good but are a bit noisy, will drill the rivets out and repack before the first track day. I bought a beautiful set of rearsets but they foul the pipes - so more work there as well - nothing is simple is it

Well a year has gone by and what progress on worlds slowest project?

Image

Forks are in (ZXR400 L)
Front calipers are in (GSXR600 K1)
Swing arm and rear wheel is in (RGV250)
Carbon mudguard and hugger in

Finally got the ride hight sorted (Hagon KR1-S shock RGV250 linkage ZX6 dogbones) is 10mm higher than stock at the rear but it feels a bit hard.

Next job repaint and repack the the pipes and take it for a shakedown test

That really is looking mean 8)

What are you doing for rear end plastics?

I'm assuming (one should never assume!) you are going for a solo seat arrangement?

Just got to say the swingarm looks good, really good =D>

Hi nice job with that swing arm i like, iknow the feeling it seems like a very long time ago when i started, im just waiting for stuff from powder coaters, but things are moving thats the way we have to look at it, all but slowly, but i don't think it should be rushed and an open cheque book would be nice to cheers Wayne.

Howie - I have a spare set of original plastics in black and green - but I've also got an unpainted fibre glass single seat unit - I will go for the standard stuff to start with so I can road test with the plates from my road bike

The slowest project known to man inches slowly forward.

Spannies repainted, repacked and refitted
Rearsets fitted
Bodywork fitted for photo purposes only
It is actually runnining in picture - faint smoke visible!

Discovered RGV rear end requires longer chain than standard - briefly considered fitting 15 split links but concerned this may snap and wrap chain round own neck - so will buy longer chain

Started it up today - god it sounds good!, can't wait to get it on the track - possibly hit the tarmac sections of the Imber Range path on Salisbury Plain when chain fitted - no documents required if you are faster than the range wardens (my 6 year old is faster on roller skates)
