KR1S Project

I bought KR1Lee's 2 projects off him last October (see for sale section)

Due to the time of year (cold) - progress has been a bit slow

First thing i did was get the cracked engine mount welded on the KR1S frame

One of the engines was seized but complete - stripped the top end off and it was the crank which was solid (good
news in a way)

The other engine had a seized crank with no top end

I had this spare bottom end sitting in my shed

Gave it a bit of a clean

I mated this with the top end and loosely assembled a mock bike in the KR1 frame to see what it sounded like - and whether i needed to do any major work/spending before taking things further.

Fitted minimal electrics and fuelling just to get it running and no nasty noises. I had overflowing carbs problem
which didn't help but nothing which can't be fixed.

Now i know the basics are okay i can get on with the build. I won't be throwing money at it. Just fixing what
needs doing and cleaning up with the intention of making a reliable :lol: tidy bike.

I intend to keep the reverse black/green paint scheme already on the bodywork

Weather seems to be picking up so should be able to make some good progress soon

Been slowed up with some decorating

However have given the engine a further clean - will look at it again once i have a rolling chassis

As i have said before it's not going to be a money pit or show winner so got to keep a reign on costs as far as possible and re-use if serviceable :P

Tried polishing the yokes but after few hours still wasn't happy

So decided to paint and lacquer them, cleaned up the bearings and races and refitted. All feels good.

Next job is to make a good pair out of these. KR1S bottoms mated to KR1 stanchions (these have the best chrome in swept area and will be able to
put the bad chrome at the top facing the frame) Have got some new OE seals.

Forks were a bigger problem than i thought (thanks for the replies in the technical section).
All had the damper bolts loctited in.
One eventually came loose, SEP managed to free the second one (they also did the frame weld). I am afraid the KR1 lowers had to
get the hacksaw treatment :oops: as their value didn't warrant more expenditure.
Impact gun is probably the best way to go - but i don't have one and don't know anyone who does.
Anyway got them in bits
Contents of KR1S forks are the top items in below photo - non standard and don't come to bits so used the KR1 springs (bottom items).
I know KR1 springs are slightly different length but this won't be a problem.

Anyway all back together and now in place.
Can fit switches and carbs.next :P

Going to start looking more like a bike soon, once the carbs switches etc get fitted.

Any idea what the mod on the forks are, because that spacer is massive in the top of the pic, I'd assume the springs are very strong as they look to have very limited stroke on them?? Has the bottom been modified as well, as from memory, I thought the damper tube can be removed on 's' forks.

Cleaned up some switch gear and fitted along with throttle, new LH grip (RH had no wear) and carbs

Regarding the S fork internals.
The damper rod doesn't appear to come apart from the stanchion readily - it is not the standard one (only has one oil hole) and if you look at it from the top it has a round opening rather than the star shape (if you know what i mean). Not sure how you would tighten it up again.

Brakes all cleaned and calipers painted
Just got to reassemble now

Waiting for the shock to be rebuilt so thought i would do a few other things in the meantime

Gave the front mudguard a clean and spray. It needs a bit more polishing to finish but happy with the result.

I have never had much luck repairing plastics in the past - including plastic welding

Read some good reviews of this item so bought some from Halfords . Got to say i am well impressed. It seems to make a strong join with a minimum amount of product.

I also bought a nice set of discs which have cleaned up well. The centres have a few scratch marks but will leave them as they are since the original finish seems quite tough.
