Pandora's box - Kr1s

Post by dmac »

Well, I have some free time today so thought I would share the story of my Pandora's box.

The gist of Pandora's box is that Pandora opened it, and all evil contained therein escaped and spread over the earth.

This sums up my KR1s

This little lot was bought over a year ago for 100 quid,
Image

As it turns out, this was the cheapest part of the project.

Then over time I bought more parts from far and wide, quite a few from members here - some of you may recognize you parts and packaging :D

Image

So I was still left with half a bike, when a project bike came up locally - This bike turned out to be the spawn of Lucifer himself.

Image

I payed wayyyyyyy to much for this dung heap and brought it home -- Slowly discovering how bad it really was.
I did the decent thing and dismembered it immediately.
I used to be undecided, but now I am not so sure.

If one photo could sum up the project bike, this would be it

Image

The bike came with a spare swing arm which had the same wear marks

I don't think they are supposed to bend out like that

Image

At least the are both bent by the same amount

Forks - Bent
Front wheel - Bent
Front disc - Bent
rear wheel - you guessed it -- Bent

Happily I have spares, The good news is the engine looks good and the KIPS valves are all present and correct.
I used to be undecided, but now I am not so sure.

I don't know what direction this bike is going. Do I make a straight but slightly scruffy bike I am not afraid of getting dirty
or a minty bike that I can trash and then lovingly polish? hmmm maybe do the first and then pretty it up at a later time -
I don't know

One thing I do know, is that from this moment on, the bike will be known as Pandora :D

Poor old Pandora had a nasty dent in the left frame rail,
obtained in one of her many trips off road.

Image

The dent went up about one third of the way up the rail.

Image

Decided to get it sorted, drilled an 8mm acess hole.

Image

Then with a bit of heat, a couple of blunt instruments and some gentle loving - it got worked out.

Image

Happy enough with the result, The rail is now flat. There are three small low spots on the curved part.
A 95% repair - it was never going to be perfect and knowing when to stop is half the battle.

I will get the access hole welded up when the lock stop is being repaired.
I used to be undecided, but now I am not so sure.

Not a huge amount of progress to report,

I want to have the wheels powdercoated and the frame welded.

The problem is that it's Christmas - So no one will want to do anything until mid January. Bah

So I have been cleaning up years of filth and grime off Pandora's bits,
and going through the boxes of crap to sort the best parts and assemblies and moving the remains out of my way.

Cleaned up the best rocker arm, used the best shafts and replaced a damaged seal with a good spare one.
Image

Striped the front calipers and am waiting to sandblast the bodies. Pistons are ok for now.
Image

So that's it for now - up to my elbows in grubby parts - Hope to have Pandora wailing by April :D

Well being in the Christmas spirit, I decided to visit my brother - who just happens to have a sandblaster :D

Image

I did some brackets while I was there.
Image

Will paint some and may plate the others, depends on how lazy I am.

The gear lever was fairly twisted along it's length and at the end - this was the best one of the pair I have.
Image

A good bit of heat and alot of small tweeks brought it back to how I think it should be.
Then a rub on the wire wheel, and all I need is a new rubber.
Image

Then came the side stand, I would like to think it was worn away from knee down cornering,
But it was probably from sliding down the road

Image

I built up the ball at the end and the sticky out bit with weld, then shaped it back.
Still needs a little bit of reshaping.

Nice progress =D> =D> =D>

What finish are you going for on the brackets and callipers?

Aha -- A simple question, but the answer I only figured out today.

Looking at the replacement wheels, They are grey now, but used to be green.
So the easy option would be to pack them off to the powder coaters and let them worry about it.

But the paint is thin on the wheels with all the green previously stripped off, and the bearings are perfect so I am going to 2 pack them.
Spent 3 hours today preping the front wheel.

The frame, brackets and calipers are getting the same treatment, with some bits being zinc plated.

Only problem is I have only used spray cans before, but have out grown them - so time to learn something new.

Dmac,

I have recently moved from cans to guns. A local spray paint supply shop runs lessons and has lots of DIY videos. Search for VG Auto Paints.

I have purchased the right equipment and have finished my first spray job. 2T of the frame and wheels, while acrylic on the body work.

2T gives a loverly finish, smooth and gated, but there are lots of health warnings about it. Acrylic is easy and safe to use but more work to get a nice smooth glossy finish.

But it certainly isn't hard and will save you heaps. I also bought a small Roland vinyl cutter to do my own signs.

Have a go.

Thanks for that Kneewall,

I am lucky to have a friendly paint supplier locally, so I will be testing their patience

Really need to take the health side of it seriously - An air fed mask seems to be the way to go.

With all the effort being put in to the preparation, it seems a shame to use spray cans at the last stage.

I will check out VG auto paints, Thanks.

Some nice work there, 2k lacquer is great, even over celly base but read this, air fed mask definite and read the stuff about just sanding the stuff after is highly dangerous
http://www.hse.gov.uk/mvr/bodyshop/isocyanates.htm

I did my calipers in Hammerite gold for my ZXR750. At that time I hadn't worked with 2k lacquer, but if I had I would have coated them. I will do the KR calipers like this, take a look at my rebuild thread
