Looks like a new model is coming out

So to date as of May 2016

Replacement front forks (old ones were shagged)

LSL Clubman bars
Alloy single clock mount
Fork Gaitors
Chunky lockable fuel cap
Mirror hole blanks
Rear mudguard eliminator with Lucas style rear light
Thruxton front mudguard (will need modding to fit)
h***a 3 piston front caliper to replace standard 2 piston caliper (Bolts straight in [-o< )
Thruxton seat
Thruxton seat cowl
Angel eye headlamp to fit inside standard shell (looks more retro !!)
Stainless Predator silencers
Alloy bullet style indicators and rear locator brackets
Thruxton rear shocks (Longer) (Now TEC Shocks)
Removed air injection system
New horn
Skid plate
EBC Front Floating Disc (Old disc worn out and pretty heavy)
TEC Rear Shocks ( Cheap but a great improvement)

Anyone tackled the valve shims on a 4 banger

I know we have other bikes

Cams have to come out on the Bonny to change the shims but are on gears so the cam chain can stay in place
Still fecking daunting though 8-[

I've done plenty mate (I'm a qualified bike mechanic, got certificates and note from my Mum and everything) but never actually tackled them on a Bonny but from screw and locknut to shim on/under bucket, it's just a job that needs planning and patience. If you want any advice let me know.

Well got the manual and watched the youtube videos , all 3 !! and I feel I can do the spannering but will have to get a mate in to do the maths of the shims

I understand now they tighten up with wear which isn't good

Specs for the inlet is 0.15mm to 0.20mm gap
Specs for the exhaust is 0.25mm to 0.30mm

Now it says you look for the medium of the above specs when calculating the new shim size

Is that correct

Bike has done 22K and I believe they have never been done
(I'm the third owner 21K when I bought it ) and I guess I have been putting it off but now is the time

Now first thing first will be measuring the gaps.......

Appreciate any help \:D/

I always calculate to the medium of the tolerance, I'd go for .18 and .26 when doing the maths.

In honesty they might be worn but still in tolerance, I've just done the NC30 and only 4 out of the 16 needed any adjustment and the motor is on 36000 miles so you never know with any luck you might just get to check them all and put the covers back on :)

Wow that is a result then on 36000 miles

The Bonny according to the manual should have had them checked at 12K so I'm coming up to double that

Yeah the VFR and CBR 4's need checking at 16000 but rarely need much adjustment, they have such small valves I don't think they wear into the seats or suffer from stretch at all unless they're being raced. The Bonny on the other hand, I guess you'll be finding out soon

Well the results are in and

Remember the spec for this engine was

Exhausts 0.25mm to 0.30mm

Inlets 0.15mm to 0.20mm

Well ALL inlets were 0.20mm I couldn't get a 0.21mm in, so right on the loose end of the spec but still in tolerance.

Exhausts were a mixed bag with right side 0.28mm and inner right 0.31mm
Left side BOTH were 0.25mm I couldn't get a 0.26mm in, so right side loose and left side tight

So looks like OK for now but we are on the loose and tight end of things :?

How many more miles do you think I should recheck ?
Maybe ride the summer and check again ?

Let me think 22k and settings are bang on, I would take a punt on another 10,000 or 5 years based on your miles per year. Dont worry about it just rag it.

no rechecking, put them correct now, meaning 0.17/0.18 in and 0.27/0.28 out

Yeah I guess they were ready "run in "

Not sure though as they didn't mark the pistons left and right when the breakers stripped it, so not sure what I do here ?

Maybe need someone to measure pistons and bore :?: or is 500 miles OK to mix and match :?: , just take it easy for a few hundred miles :?:

Head is going to 2 stroke Guru Bob Farnham for a skim and gas flow :P

On the previous thread about shimming, he said that if I send the cams in the head he will shim it on the bench
Is this way just as accurate then ?
