Low or no Ethanol Petrol

Post by Binetta Steve »

Just copied this from the classic section on the GS BMW forum, some info on low ethanol fuels.

Not sure when this was published, buts its Esso Supreme for the KR next time

Steve

BP: Bioethanol is becoming increasingly present in the UK’s super-unleaded (premium/higher octane) petrol, because, in compliance with the UK government’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, fuel suppliers have been required to increase the quantity of bio fuels in their transport fuels since 2008. As a consequence, the inclusion of bioethanol in our BP Ultimate Unleaded supply chain is an evolving situation and we are therefore unable to give you categorical assurances as to its absence or presence. However we can assure you that – as required by the The Motor Fuel (Composition and Content) (Amendment) Regulations 2013 – the content of bioethanol in our BP Ultimate Unleaded gasoline will never be more than 5% by volume until 1st January 2017 at the earliest.

ESSO: You may be aware that the majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO). Our energy Supreme Unleaded is largely ethanol free with the exception of Scotland, the North eastern corner of England and the far South West. Where ethanol free energy Supreme Unleaded is available, customers may wish to choose that grade – at least 80% of Esso retailed energy Supreme Unleaded is ethanol free and will remain so into the foreseeable future.

Texaco (Valero) : Please be advised that both our Premium grade fuels now have a 5% Ethanol content.

Shell: Both Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Shell V-Power Unleaded contain up to 5% ethanol as stipulated by the European fuel specification EN228 and UK government legislation. At Shell, we are passionate about fuel, and our dedicated fuel scientists work continuously in the lab to bring you the most advanced and effective fuels.

Hi Ben i understand the tetraethylead, as its an anti knock additive, but why ethanol. Ethanol has a lower calorific value than Petrol?
Does it contribute to cooling of the fuel charge or something along these lines?

LEAD in petrol and determining the age of EARTH

Post by KR-1R »

I'm not a chemist so don't know if 'lead' does anything to improves octane rating or simply allows for higher compression due to slowing/retarding combustion hence long term use a additive to improve pre ignition/knock.

ever wash you hands in petrol when you were younger - even knowing you were told not to?
a cupful of pure TEL on your skin can prove lethal

the older you get the more interesting History becomes

the background behind lead in fuel is very interesting - if u can watch...
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: episode 7 "The Clean Room"
" Clair Patterson did as a graduate under his adviser Harrison Brown to provide an accurate count of lead in zircon particles from Meteor Crater, and to work with similar results being collected by George Tilton on uranium counts; with the established half-life of uranium's radioactive decay to lead, this would be used to estimate the age of the Earth. Patterson found that his results were contaminated by lead from the ambient environment, compared to Tilton's results, and required the construction of the first ultra-high cleanroom to remove all traces of environmental lead. With these clean results, Patterson was able to estimate the age of the Earth to 4.5 billion years.
...goes on to explain that Patterson's work in performing lead-free experiments directed him to investigate the sources for lead. Tyson notes how lead does not naturally occur at Earth's surface but has been readily mined by humans (including the Roman Empire), and that lead is poisonous to humans. Patterson examined the levels of lead in the common environment and in deeper parts of the oceans and Antarctic ice, showing that lead had only been brought to the surface in recent times. He would discover that the higher levels of lead were from the use of tetraethyllead in leaded gasoline, despite long-established claims by Robert A. Kehoe and others that this chemical was safe. Patterson would continue to campaign against the use of lead, ultimately resulting in government-mandated restrictions on the use of lead. Tyson ends by noting that similar work by scientists continues to be used to help alert mankind to other fateful issues that can be identified by the study of nature.
"

the toxicity of (TEL) lead to humans and environment - and why it took 75 years to convince the world

a must see is the series The Men That Built America - Discovery Channel

I find it difficult getting avgas so I use this stuff.

http://www.tetraboost.com

Horrible stuff and care should be taken handling and storing it.
