What caps you using then Fred?
Never had any problems using the Rubber/waterproof NGK type, and as Jan says cut the ends back a touch whenever you renew them.
Must admit the plastic type NGK caps dont fit the plugs themselves so well, more so the more there removed (not a prob on the other type).
