battery isn't needed for the ignition, a KR will start without a battery (IF you switch off the lights)

most likely your stator is faulty. there are 2 coils different to the others in it who are solely for the ignition and they are known to fail too often.

OK thanks for that, its had a new stator all be it a while ago but done very little miles since fitted, you still think it could be that? I'm happy to buy one or buy anything that will solve the problem cheers Jason

Electrex World sell a replacement stator, but it's easy enough to check yours.

Have you got a known good coil to swap the existing one with?

no , it's not when like in this case in works sometimes.
only thing you can try is measure the output voltage of the 2 coils when it is working and again immediatly after the ignition stops working. can't tell the wire colors as I'm not at home.

page 15-17 in the KR1 manual :
W-R : 2-7 ohm
B-R : 100-200 ohm
infinite between any of the 3 wires and ground.

but I would be more interested in the voltage output of the wires, as when the engine is turning over, there are vibrations everywhere which can cause a difference (causes wires to "move" and touch where the isolation is rubbed off).

It's the first thing to check, being free. If it's verging on being out of tolerance (as stated the resistance values above) it's worth replacing the stator.

Mine failed last year without warning, so yours might be telling you something...
