CDI unit

Post by 666damned »

Evening guys.....was wondering if one of you chaps could have a listen to your CDI unit when engine is running.....as mine seems to be making a pronounced clicking noise....is this normal? as never owning a KR before i am still learning about these beasts............when Mark(Red Devil 777) came round to pick up engine cases we discussed this and he said he had not noticed this before.....so over to you guys..........

You can hear a click from the cdi, when it is running
I think my cans must need repacking, I can't hear anything when mine is running. (my neighbours love me  )
Must be a bloody loud click.......

its not really loud Mike, but definitely noticeable with the seats off and no seat unit on,which is the state of play at the mo'

Every CDI should make clicking noice, but you usually can't hear it because of noise from engine. Capacitor inside CDI is discharged through HT coil in very short time (few us), with current more than 10 amperes and this making clicking noise.

Has anyone looked into what causes the CDI units to fail?
Keep hearing about "Duff CDI's", but wondering if they're actually repairable. ie. blown capacitor or the like...

Just a thought.
