Help!

Post by bwake »

Brought a new battery, put it on the bike, after a week it had gone flat  Charged it back up, after using the bike all last week, come to go on it today and battery was completely dead! I have reason to believe, it could be the rectifier what do you think?:? (Its not very far to work, about three mile trip)

where did you get the battery from and why do you think it's the the rectifier?

brought a new battery begining of the season(gel type),it went dead thought it was a duff one so got another old style acid filled one 2weeks ago.same thing has happened to that.doesn't seem to be charging of the bike hence the rectifier/regulator query.

only one way to find out : measure the voltage with the engine running.

but be careful when revving it : the CDI doesn't need much to fry if the regulator passes a too high voltage

Stator charging coils gone duff, may need re winding, need to check the Ohms resistance as per the manual.

had a spare rectifier in the parts bin, checked the resistance on this one compared to the other one and it gave different readings,so charged the battery back up swaped them around and i'll keep an eye on the voltage.(here's hoping)

Used it today, battery fully charged when I went out, got home , and the battery had dropped to 10 volts :x what shall i do now? :-s (could be 2 dodgy rectifiers but not convinced)

With my limted electrical knowledge :) it sounds as though it is a fault with the charging or a bad battery

You don't have a race loom do you - i think the charging side is sometimes
removed - but the racers will no doubt be able advise further

I guess it should dropt to 12V - if it doesn't hold a charge overnight and you
have tried 2 it seems like it is discharging somehow - do you have an alarm
fitted?
Whenever i have had a problem with the voltage dropping it has always been
because the battery is knackd

no alarm fitted,i suppose it would make sence for it to drop to 12v  i'll test it again in the morning .

you have to measure the voltage over the battery when the engine is running, only way to know what is happening.

if the voltage drops when riding, 99% the battery isn't charged.

And as JanBros said, you really need to measure the voltage when it's running.
Also, when the rec/reg fails, it normally over-charges rather than the other way round, so I somewhat doubt the issues there.

+2 When this happens it usually kills your tacho first then your CDI shortly after.
