Brake Discs

Post by DAMO666 »

I'm in the process of bushing some zxr400l yokes to fit my kr1s stem so i can use the zxr400l forks.I was going to retain the kr1s front wheel(with spacers)but was wondering about the difference in front disc sizes(310mm zxr,300mm kr1s).Obviously the caliper mounting bolts are set for 310mm discs. Will zxr400l discs fit the kr1s wheel?

Yes should do, no problems. You may probably have to make some disc spacers up though.

I used zxr 250 yokes with a kr wheel and the discs lined up ok and they're set at 200mm centres, zxr400 yokes are 210mm and take the fractionally larger front wheel and obviously line up, so if you use the smaller (across the disc face ) kr wheel you might end up having to space the discs 5mm out both sides.

Please note all dimensions are of the top of my head and due to age and alzheimers need to be checked

Ur'll have to space the new 310mm discs out 5mm for certain. Also you may need to change the wheel bearings.

I can confirm that the ZXR400L and KR1S discs have the same PCD so will fit either wheel.

ZXR400L calipers are smaller than KR1S calipers, but I understand that they still fit the fork leg.

I made the mistake of fitting KR1S discs to my ZXR400L wheel and found that not all of the disc was swept by the pads.
That extra 10mm dia makes quite a bit of difference to braking performance though.
I now have Pro-Lites - very nice :P

Don't think you can do a bearing swap to get a kr wheel to run on a zxr spindle, easiest way is to turn down a zxr spindle and make a new end piece.

Best way is to make a complete new spindle with a 17mm section and zxr400 end bits. If I remember correctly kr spindle isn't quite long enough to just bush either end.

Thanks for the info.Might be easier to get a zxr400 front wheel, I have the spindle that came with the forks. It would be then 3 spoke, Does the zxr rear fit? so they match.

It's easier to stick a 400 front in without doubt, also bare in mind early zx6 (f) is same wheel and tends to be cheaper on ebay

zxr400 wheel is wider than kr, you probably could get one in but I reckon it'd be a pain getting chain alignment. VJ22 Rgv wheel is a 3 spoke 17 inch would be an easier fit as you can do it with spacers etc.

You'll have to get a new crush drive cast to fit the ZXR400 rear wheel so it's really a no-go. Best bet, as red said, is the RGV VJ22 17" rear. To correct the ride height you'll need some 6mm shorter tie bars for the rear suspension.

I asked the very same question on the ZXR400 forum.........do you know what answer I got back?

"ZXR400 ones"

Ha. Ha. Bloody Ha Ha! ](*,)

Anyway, I made up a list eventually by getting hold of and EBC catalogue and cross refferencing part numbers. I have the list on my computer at work, however, there may be some info in the KR Kive section.

The morale of the story is, if you want to find out about non KR parts, come to the KR forum.

How do you rate the pro-lites? I might treat myself to a set, £188 a pair at brakes4u.
I have a set of race brembos with the ceramic pads on my GSXR1000 and they are awesome.Might be overkill on a light bike like the KR1S though!

I think there's a pretty simple reason for that. Basically, ZXR owners (and owners of other more common bikes) are spoiled for choice when it comes to parts. Most of the bits they need are till available from Kawasaki, as well as being catered for by a heap of aftermarket suppliers.
On the other hand, KR owners can hardly get anything new from Kawasaki and can only get a limited amount of aftermarket parts due to them not being as common. This means we have to be a lot more resoursefull and adapt parts that were not origonally designed for the KR. :-k
