R6 Shock Settings...?

Does anyone know any basic preload/rebound etc settings for a 12.5 stone rider when using an R6 rear shock in place of the original 1S shocker?

Or is it just a case of trial and error?? :-k

My shock settings have'nt been touched since i fitted it and it came straight off a brand new bike, im also only using it for road use and retaining the standard 18" rear wheel........

I've been thinking about this as well, mines not fitted yet but when I bought it the seller had very kindly changed every adjuster to maximum :evil:
As I am 9 stone dripping wet I'm guessing I may have to wind them off a bit.

how has that extra inch of height in the rear that the r6 shock has, affected the handling with kr1 rim still in rear end. I was thinking of going along the same path but wasnt sure if it would make it too quick and choppy on the road.

i would set everything to halfway if your not after shaving /tenths of a second off and just adjust till its comfortable/works ok. if your a fiddler i would set everything to std r6 settings and go from there. i thing the r6 shock is actually sprung on the soft side for the kr because of diffrence in linkage design ect. worth getting it sprung appropiatly if your on the plump side! im sure those at 8st will get away with using the std spring.

I've not fitted the R6 shock yet but I have fitted a set of different tie bars that raise the rear by about an inch, so have a similar effect.
I have to say it really improves the bike, it turns more easily and feels a lot sharper. I feel a lot more confident about the front now, especially on the brakes, I can really feel what is going on.
I'm not a racer but I suspect this is due to raising the rear steepening the head angle.
BUT you will require a steering damper, mine was very slappy on bumpy roads until I fitted one.
To me this is part of owning a race rep 250, it wouldn't be right if it wasn't a bit frisky :twisted:

It also makes the bike look better, but that wasn't the reason I did it :^o

Will get my daughter to find out what the base settings are on tuesday,(she works at Yamaha) I weigh about 12 1/2 stone & can check what settings my track bike is set at if you like? I also found that fitting new front springs (WP) & mixing w10 + w15 fork oil calmed the front end down a lot. I dont have a steering damper fitted & the few trackdays I have done havent shown up any problems so far [-o< :mrgreen:

Hi Kwackman, I've got a set of WP springs ready to fit into it - so it's reassuring that im on the right path with the handling. O:)

R6 shock base settings (as per Yamaha spec sheet)
Spring Preload :- position 4
Rebound damping (bottom of shock) :- 10 clicks out
Compression damping (fast) 7 clicks out
Compression damping (slow) 15 clicks out
To increase damping effect screw adjusters "in"

These settings are for the R6 Shock in an R6 Frame, completely different geometry, swingarm angle, weight and wheels. These settings will be no where near what you want for your KR1.

The only way to find that out will be setting your sag correctly and then trial and error your way to a good setting. If its the R6 Shock with Hi and Lo speed damping, then screw the Hi speed adjuster all the way in, then back it out 1/3 of a turn and leave it there. Lo speed will require a lot more fiddling.

here are the settings I had at a track day at Brands a few years back;

Front Forks - Standard ZXR400L
Rear Shock - [R6 ’06 std] – Standard KR1 Linkage

ADJUSTMENT
Preload
RANGE; 9 steps
SETTING; (2) 5

High Speed Compression
RANGE; 15
SETTING; (7) 8

Low Speed Compression
RANGE; 29
SETTING; (15) 12

Rebound
RANGE; 26
SETTING; (7) 2



SAG (mm)

FRONT
Static 23
Rider 39

REAR
Static (13) 8
Rider (49) 40

All numbers in brackets are settings before being set up by a suspension specialist.
The setup felt quite high for my liking and was probably about as good as it gets with an R6 shock. Since I have had it re-valved, sprung and shortened it feels much more natural and comfortable to me.

Hopefully this wiil help you to get a base setting

Hi guys, sorry to gate crash but im racing my kr1s and im in the process of changing the front forks for zxr 250 ones and i wanted to do the r6 shock conversion, however i rang and spoke to K-Tech suspension today and they told me that the r6 06 shock would be to firm for the kr1s and there wasnt a lighter spring to replace the oe one, they also told me the damping will be to hard and that i probably would be better to overhaul the standard shock.
After reading this subject im not sure where its going but are any of you on these replys racers and have tried the r6 shock on track?

Talk to Russ at Mick Gardner Racing. He'll be able to sort out our R6 Shock for you. He did Scoobles R6 Shock, as well as built a one off shock for me as well.

the standard R6 shock is too soft for the KR1 believe it or not - the leverage ratios are different. On the standard shock I think I was nealy maxed out on the low speed compression.
As elf said, give Mick Gardner a call, they didi a good deal for me :D
